Flour is mixed with a lot of water to create a thin batter which is poured onto a hot griddle, cooked with other ingredients such as vegetables and then eaten. Monjayaki was once eaten as a children’s snack in Tokyo’s shitamachi area in the postwar era when there wasn’t much food to go around. Now recognized as a famous Tokyo dish, people can eat monjayaki with plenty of ingredients including shrimp, meat and cheese. There are many restaurants serving the dish in the Tsukishima district which is known for both monjayaki and okonomiyaki.
