I've been living in Japan for a year now and really want to buy a tv, but I've heard many stories about NHK workers coming to your house and demanding you to pay. As a result, I'm too scared to open the door to them. Do I need to pay or can I just buy a tv and watch tv for free?

Fortunately, the Japanese law doesn't say that you have to pay for watching tv. As for the NHK workers, you can just open the door and tell them no thank you in English and close the door.
