Nana
Hi all,
I am looking at ryokans and hotels in rather more remote areas of Kyushu, specifically small onsen towns such as Takeo, Kirishima and Takachiho. Is it recommended to book through the hotel's websites or should I go through an agent such as Agoda and Japanican? What are the advantages to each? I am aware that certain ryokans can only be booked through calling the hotel or that certain hotel sites are only in Japanese, but they seem to offer lower prices and greater choices of accommodation and meal plans.
Thanks again!

Hi Nana,
If you have the option, I'd recommend booking directly from the Ryokan page.
When hotels and Ryokans put their booking on a third party website, they have to pay a percentage of the price to that website, also if they change their price, maybe it won't reflect on the third party website.
If you can call them or book from their website directly, you can be sure that you have the lowest prices and that your room will be available for sure. Sometimes they have 10 rooms available but only list up to 8 in the third party websited to make sure they have extra on their own website or for walk-ins.
On the other hand, the other services could maybe provide extra reassurance for you in terms of cancellations. And information in English. But usually, the cancellation terms are the same if you do directly.
