Hi!
What's the reaction from Japanese people to gay tourists (or even locals) showing affection in public areas? - Do they stare or say something?
Also, how is the LGBT culture overall in the big cities (e.g. Tokyo)? Are there a lot of gay clubs or events targeted to the LGBT+ community - any particular clubs / events / neighborhoods that you recommend attending or visiting?
Thanks!
Hi, Diego!
Hmm.. I do think that some people will see (not to the extent of stare) you showing affection in public areas, but it is not because you are gay. I guess it is not common for Japanese people to show affection even in private, for example, it might be common to hug people in public in the west, but I hardly remember hugging to my Japanese friends. Basically, people don't have much interest in what other people are doing on the streets, so it should be no problem!
In Tokyo, there is this area called Shinjuku Ni Cho-me, which is an area where there are many gay bars and clubs. I guess it is the biggest community in Japan. But you could find gay bars in most big cities like Shibuya and Ikebukuro. About events related to LGBT+ community, we have this big Pride parade annually, which had a big crowd coming out to support.
This is the official website: http://tokyorainbowpride.com/about-trp2017
It was on May 6th this year, and we had lots and lots of people marching down the streets of Shibuya :)
Above all, I myself have some gay friends, and even though I might not be fully aware of their problems, please do know that there are so many people out here who are open to diversity :)
I hope my comments helps!
