Train etiquette

You’re allowed to eat on both the Shinkansen and the Express train to Takayama. One way you can tell which trains you’re allowed to eat on and which ones not to, is to see if the windowsill is enlarged like a table. Another way is to see how the seats are arranged. If all the seats are facing forward towards the front of the train, those are most likely long distance trains so you can eat on them. If the seats are facing sideways like the trains in the Tokyo metropolitan area, those are the ones you’re not supposed to eat on.
