I am interested in a temple stay in or near Kyoto, and am looking for somewhere I can book in English as I don’t speak any Japanese. Any suggestions?I’m looking for something quiet and traditional/cultural like Mt. Koya. I enjoy hiking and the outdoors, so seeing waterfalls (like the ones that come out in the Japanese paintings) and temples/monastaries in the nearby areas would be great too.

I don’t know if there are any you can book in Kyoto, but if you want to find a temple in Koyasan or some place else please try the following website. There are some places that can be booked in English and others that you need to call to make a booking.http://eng.shukubo.net/temple-lodging.htmlwa-qoo.com/en/archives/category/shukubolhttp://japan-magazine.jnto.go.jp/en/1511_eiheiji.html

How about Daishin-In Zen temple in the large Nyoshinji temple property, west side of Kyoto city? You can reach there on JR San In line from Hanazono station (10min. walk) or bus from Kyoto station. It’s within walking distance to Ryoanji/Kinkakuji. The rate is 5,000yen including 500yen bf(no meat/fish). They offer optional but delicious Shojin Ryori dinner(5,000yen & up).
But you need to send a post card to book here. The property also has Shunko-in which is also a Zen temple and you can book a stay on-line but the rooms are like a college dorm and offers no meals.
Nyoshinji complex is off beaten path and offer very few tourists(just locals) and very tranquil. Taizo-in is situated inside the property.
The temple has Ying-Yang rock gardens(better than Ryoanji, imo), beautiful koi pond, grass garden, etc.
