We’re planning to visit Tokyo for 4 days next month and one of the things we’d like to do while we're there is to visit the Tsukiji fish market. Do you think it'll be possible for us to see the fish auction? I hear that you need to get there really early in the morning to see it. At what time should we be there?

If you want to see the tuna fish auction, then you need to be ready to get up in the middle of the night. It starts at 5am but it's basically first come first serve with only a limited number of participants allowed in, so you'll need to get there to get in line at least 1 hour in advance. Sometimes even 1 hour isn't enough to guarantee you a spot, so if you're able to, I'd go 1.5 - 2 hours in advance. If you decide not to go to the auction, the inner market will be open to the public again from 10am. The outer market will be open from earlier so maybe you should aim to get there around 9am for a fresh sushi breakfast.
