Next Thursday I will be interviewed for an IT job at a small company in Osaka. I really hope to get the job, but I am not sure what to wear. Can I be too formal or not formal enough?

Definitely suit up! In Japan, when people go job hunting people mostly wear a dark suit (black, dark blue, grey) and a white shirt. Women can either wear pants or a skirt. Even if your company might be more casual than that, for first impressions and to show that you really want the job go for the suit.
