Driving in Hokkaido is not difficult at all. Even city traffic is nowhere near as bad as other major cities. I mean, I wouldn't even consider driving in Tokyo, but Hokkaido is easier to get around with a car. But you shouldn't plan for more than 2-4 hours per day of driving.
