We’re planning a day trip from Tokyo. We’ve heard that Hakone and Shimoda are nice places to visit in the summer time. Which would you recommend and why?

If you're planning a day trip, you should definitely go with Hakone. It’s much closer to Tokyo than Shimoda is. Hakone takes maybe 1.5 - 2 hours to get to depending on where you start from, whereas Shimoda takes about 3.5 hours.
