I'd like to visit Kanazawa and the Kenrokuen Garden while I'm visiting Japan this winter. I've seen beautiful pictures online of the trees with the snow and the lights at night, and it's on my list of must see places. Is it hard to get there? Is it possible as a day trip? Or should I plan to stay a night?

Getting to Kanazawa is quite easy now that the Hokuriku Shinkansen has reached the area. Just go to Tokyo station and get on the Hokuriku Shinkansen bound for Kanazawa. You should reserve tickets beforehand if you want to make sure you want to get on at a particular time. It’ll take 2.5 - 3 hours depending on which train you take. I suppose it is possible to make a day trip out of it, but as there are more things to see in Kanazawa besides Kerokuen, I would recommend staying a night.
