Our family would like to visit the Izu Penninsula this summer, more specifically the Shimoda area. Is it better to do this as an overnight trip? Or is it possible in a day trip from Yokohama?

I would recommend doing it as an overnight trip as it's pretty far away, even though it may seem relatively close. It's going to take you maybe 3.5 hours to get to Shimoda even from Yokohama, so start in the morning and get there around lunch time, spend the night, and start back in the afternoon on your 2nd day.
